Kai Fujii Quartet
The Kai Fujii Quartet brings together some of Perth's brightest young jazz musicians to perform original music, standards, and fresh arrangements inspired by two very different jazz scenes. Kai Fujii is a Japanese-Australian guitarist and composer based in Perth, and a current WAAPA student. He is a member of Belvoir and leads Wisteria, his own folk alternative side project, alongside his ongoing work in the Perth jazz scene. Kai recently spent time studying and performing in New York and Tokyo, and draws on what he learned from both scenes to shape wistful arrangements and fresh improvisation. The quartet features Lachlan Edinger on keys, Curtis Hardwick on bass, and Joel Drieburg on drums.
Some of the members of the band recently returned from the Summer Jazz Arts Collective camp in New York, an intensive study tour that placed them in direct contact with some of the most celebrated musicians working in the jazz world today.
Fujii will debut original compositions written in direct response to the trip, taking heavy inspiration from the New York jazz scene and his ongoing engagement with the modern jazz landscape in Tokyo.
